Partition Walls: Splitting a Trailer Into Two Spaces

A partition wall is a full or partial wall built across the width of the trailer, dividing it into a front section and a rear section. It is a simple option on our options sheet and it solves a surprising number of problems: a race trailer with a lounge up front and a car bay behind, a landscaping trailer with a clean tool room ahead of the mower deck, a vendor with stock storage separate from the service counter. Here is when it makes sense and how to lay it out.

The clean-and-dirty split

The most common reason for a partition is to keep one space clean. Mowers, wet equipment and gravel-covered machines go in the back; tools, paperwork, a change of clothes and anything you do not want covered in grass go in the front. A door in the partition lets you pass between them. For a mobile business, the front becomes an office or a break area, and the partition means the customer-facing space does not look like the working space.

The living-area split

Race and show-car teams use the partition to build a lounge or sleeping area in the V-nose and the first few feet of the trailer. A partition with an insulated wall and a proper door lets that space be heated and cooled separately from the car bay. Our post on insulation and climate control covers what that takes. Full or partial

A full partition runs floor to ceiling and wall to wall, usually with a door. A partial wall, or half wall, stops at waist or shoulder height and is used to separate spaces without closing them off: a barrier between a workbench and the load area, or a low wall that keeps rolling equipment out of the front. The half wall is also listed as a frame option for open-sided and hybrid trailers, where it forms the side of a lower section. Choose the full wall if the front space needs to be climate controlled or secure; choose the half wall if you just need to stop things rolling forward.

Where to place it

• Measure the rear section for its longest load first. A car needs its full length plus room to walk around the front of it.
• Put the partition just ahead of that point. The front section gets whatever is left.
• Keep the partition behind the side door if the side door serves the front room, or ahead of it if the side door serves the bay.
• Remember that the axles carry the weight. A heavy front section, cabinets and a generator, shifts tongue weight; our load balance guide explains the limits.

Doors, power and finish

Order the partition with a door if you will ever need to pass between the sections without going outside. Run the electrical package to both sides so each has its own lights and receptacles. Finish the front section walls in liner or panel if it is a living or office space, and leave the rear section in standard finish where it will take abuse. A partition on a 7-wide has to work around the wheel wells; on an 8.5-wide the flat floor makes it simpler.
