Cabinets and Workbenches: Building the Interior Properly
An interior build-out that is attached to the walls rather than the frame will loosen. Here is how it should be done.

Interior build-outs are where a cargo trailer becomes a working vehicle. They are also where the most avoidable mistakes happen.
Attach to the frame
The single most important point. Cabinets and benches fastened only into the wall skin or the thin interior liner will work loose, because a trailer vibrates continuously in a way a building does not.
Mounting has to reach the structural members. That is far easier done at build time when the wall is open than afterward through a finished interior.
Weight distribution
A heavy cabinet run down one side makes the trailer tow badly and wears one side's tyres and bearings faster.
- Balance heavy build-out side to side.
- Keep weight low and near the axles where possible. Our load balancing guide covers the handling reason.
- Remember that a cabinet's weight includes what goes in it, which is usually the larger number.
Bench height and depth
- Standard bench height suits most people standing; measure yourself rather than assuming.
- Depth beyond arm's reach becomes storage you cannot use.
- Leave knee room if you will sit at it.
- Consider whether it needs to be strong enough to clamp to or work on, which changes the construction.
What to build at the factory
Anything that needs to reach the frame, anything that affects wiring, and anything that would mean opening a finished wall later.
- Cabinet and bench mounting points.

What can wait
Bins, shelving inserts, drawer organisers, pegboard, and anything that bolts to what is already there. Those are cheap to change as the operation evolves, and it is worth leaving flexibility.
Plan for change
Businesses change. A build-out that is completely fixed is one that constrains you in three years. Fixed mounting points with adjustable shelving in between is the arrangement that ages best.
