Buying a Trailer Near Tallahassee: What Is Worth the Drive

The capital market has contractors, event outfits and a university's worth of moving demand. All three end up on our lot.

Tallahassee is about 128 miles from the Douglas lot, most of it through Thomasville and down US-319 or across on US-84. It is our largest Florida market after Jacksonville, and the buyers there fall into three fairly distinct groups.

Contractors and trades

The Big Bend construction market runs the same enclosed cargo as everywhere else in the Southeast, with the same considerations: tandem axle for stability, side door for access, extra height because nobody regrets it. What is a little different in Tallahassee is the amount of work on properties with mature tree cover, which puts a premium on manoeuvrability — plenty of buyers here choose a 7x14 over a 7x16 for exactly that reason.

Event, catering and vendor use

A capital city with two universities generates a steady amount of event work, and an enclosed trailer is the standard way to move it. What matters for that use is different from trades work:

  • **Presentation.** A trailer that shows up at an event is part of the brand. Colour, finish and wrap-readiness matter here in a way they do not on a jobsite.
  • **Interior finish.** Wall liner, lighting and a clean floor if what is going in it is not tools.
  • **Load height and ramp gradient**, if you are wheeling carts or catering equipment in and out repeatedly.
  • **Electrical.** Interior lighting and shore power hookup are worth specifying at purchase rather than retrofitting.

Moving and storage

A university town has a moving season, and a lot of people who buy a trailer for it discover it earns its keep the rest of the year too. For occasional moving use, a 6x12 or 7x14 single or tandem is usually sufficient, and the thing to prioritise is a ramp door and enough tie-down points to stop a load shifting.

Hurricane season is a real consideration

The Big Bend takes storms, and a trailer is both a liability and an asset in that. A liability because an empty enclosed trailer is a sail and will move in high wind. An asset because it is dry, lockable storage and it can be towed away from a storm track.

  1. 1Know where you would move it to before a storm is named.
  2. 2If it must stay, park it nose into the prevailing wind, chock it, and weight it down rather than leaving it empty.
  3. 3Keep the title and insurance details somewhere other than in the trailer.
  4. 4Photograph it annually for insurance purposes, before you need to.

Frequently Asked

How far is Tallahassee from your lot?+

About 128 miles, running through Thomasville. It is a comfortable half-day round trip, and we also deliver into the Tallahassee area if you would rather not tow it back.

What size trailer is best for event and vendor work?+

It depends on what you are moving, but the considerations differ from trades use — presentation, interior finish, lighting and power matter more, and load height matters if you are wheeling carts in and out. Talk to us about the specific use rather than picking on size alone.
