What a working trailer needs in this market
A contractor trailer in Northeast Florida is a rolling shop that sits outside in the weather, gets loaded and unloaded several times a day, and is a target when it is parked overnight. Those three facts drive the spec.
Size and axle configuration
For a one- or two-man trades outfit, a 7x14 or 7x16 tandem is the workhorse. Single-axle units are lighter and easier to move by hand, but a loaded trades trailer gets heavy quickly and a tandem tows far better at highway speed on I-95 and I-295.
The door decision
A rear ramp door is the default and it is right for anything you wheel in — mowers, compressors, carts, dollies. Barn doors are better if you are loading from a dock or want the full opening without a ramp swinging into traffic, which matters on tight urban jobsites.
A side door is not optional on a working trailer. Getting to the front of the load without opening the whole back end saves time on every single job.
Height
Additional interior height is the option contractors most often regret skipping. Standing up inside the trailer changes how you work in it, and it costs far less at purchase than it does to trade up later.
Security
- Upgraded latches and lock guards on the rear and side doors.
- Interior tie-downs so the load is not moving around and hitting the walls.
- Wheel locks or a hitch lock for overnight parking.
- Nothing branded on the outside that advertises what is inside, which is a genuine consideration in a metro market.
Coastal air is a factor
Jacksonville is a coastal market and salt air reaches inland further than people expect. It attacks the undercarriage, the axles, the wiring connections and any exposed fastener. Rinsing the underside periodically genuinely extends the life of a trailer here, and it is worth specifying corrosion-resistant hardware where the option exists.
