Building a Mobile Welding Rig in an Enclosed Trailer

Mobile welders work where the job is: a farm gate in Coffee County, a broken trailer hitch on the side of US-441, a fence line, a jobsite. The rig has to arrive with a welder, a way to power it, gas bottles, grinders, clamps and a stock of steel, and it has to be set up to work within minutes. An enclosed cargo trailer does that job well if it is built for it. This is how to spec one.

Weight first

An engine-driven welder alone can weigh several hundred pounds, and a few sticks of angle and flat bar add up faster than people think. Add a generator, a full set of bottles, a vise and a bench, and a welding trailer is heavy before the first customer. A tandem-axle 7x14 or 7x16 with a 5,200 lb axle package is the realistic starting point. Our GVWR guide explains how to add it up, and the answer usually surprises first-time builders.

Generator and welder placement

An engine-driven welder or generator should sit over the axles, bolted to the floor through a steel plate, with its exhaust routed outside. Never run either one with the doors closed. The cleanest solution is a generator door on the side wall, which is one of the utility door options we build, so the machine can run with the main doors shut against rain. Gas bottles

Bottles are the part that gets people hurt. Mount them upright in a rack bolted to the frame, chained at the shoulder, caps on in transit, and valves closed. Keep oxygen and fuel gases separated. A dedicated bottle compartment with its own vented door, accessible from outside, is the best arrangement because it keeps the bottles out of the workspace and vents any leak outdoors. Ask about a vented compartment at build time; it is a far better answer than a rack in the corner.

Ventilation and fire

Grinding and welding inside an enclosed box is a bad idea without airflow. Most mobile welders work outside the trailer and use it as the shop and store, but for the days it rains, roof vents and a powered exhaust fan are the minimum. Keep a fire extinguisher by each door, keep flammables in a sealed cabinet, and do not line the walls with anything that burns near the work area.

Floor, bench and steel storage

• A steel plate or aluminum tread floor over the plywood, at least under the bench and the machine. Sparks and hot slag on plywood end badly.
• A heavy workbench with a vise at the front, bolted to the frame, not the floor.
• Steel stock in a rack along the wall or in a tube under the bench, strapped so it cannot slide.
• Cable and lead storage on hooks by the rear door so it pays out without kinking.
• Grinders, clamps and consumables in labeled bins at eye height.

Doors and access

A ramp door makes it possible to roll heavy equipment in and out and to use the ramp itself as a work platform. A side door near the front lets you reach the bench and bins without opening the back. If the welder will run inside, an escape door or a second side door gives you cross ventilation and a second way out.

Lighting and outlets

Order a 110V package with a panel box and interior receptacles, then feed it from the generator so the grinders and lights run off the same power the welder uses. Add 12V LED dome lights on a battery for the times the generator is off. Exterior flood lights on the rear corners make night jobs possible.
