Trailer Paperwork: VIN, Title and What You Actually Need in Georgia

Buying a trailer is straightforward. The paperwork afterward is where first-time buyers get uncertain, mostly because nobody explains what each document is for.
The VIN plate
Every trailer we build carries a VIN plate, usually on the frame near the tongue. That number is the trailer's identity and it appears on every document associated with it.
Two things worth doing the day you take delivery: photograph the plate, and write the number somewhere that is not on the trailer. If the trailer is ever stolen, that number is what a report is built around, and it is remarkably common for owners not to have it.
What the plate tells you
- The VIN itself.
- The manufacturer.
- The date of manufacture.
- The GVWR — the maximum the trailer is rated to weigh, loaded.
- The GAWR — the maximum each axle is rated to carry.
- The tire and rim specification the trailer was built for.

What to keep, and where

Keep a copy somewhere other than in the trailer. A folder in the truck is not a backup if the trailer and the truck disappear together.
