Fleet Trailers for HVAC, Plumbing and Electrical Crews

A van holds what fits in a van. A service trailer holds a whole job: the water heater, the condenser, the wire spools, the ladders, and the fittings you would otherwise drive back to the supply house for. HVAC, plumbing and electrical outfits across our delivery range run enclosed trailers behind their trucks for exactly that reason, and the ones that run them well have figured out a few things about the spec.

Size for the biggest routine job

Most service trailers are 7-wide tandems between 14 and 16 feet. The width is set by the equipment: a residential condenser or a 50-gallon water heater fits between the wheel wells of a 7-wide with room to strap it. The length is set by how much shelving you want down the walls while still keeping an aisle. A 7x16 with a side door and a ramp is the most common spec we build for trades crews, and our contractors and tradesmen post covers the general reasoning.

Standardize the layout

The single biggest win for a fleet is building every trailer the same. When the shelving, bins and tie-downs are in the same place in every unit, a technician who moves between trucks knows where the PVC fittings live without looking, and inventory counts take ten minutes instead of an hour. It also means one parts order and one set of drawings when you add a fourth trailer next year.

• Shelving down the long wall opposite the side door, with a clear aisle.
• E-track on both walls at two heights so long stock and ladders strap flat.
• Bin storage near the side door for the fittings and fasteners you reach for most.
• A workbench with a vise at the front, under a light.
• The heavy items, water heaters, coils and wire spools, over the axles.

Security

A trades trailer parked at a jobsite overnight is full of copper, tools and equipment, and it looks like it. Order the security hardware at build time rather than bolting it on later: a barlock on the side door, a flushlock on the ramp, and a hitch lock and wheel lock in every truck. Power

Electrical crews in particular want the trailer to be a place to charge and test. A 110V electrical package with a panel box, a shore power lifeline and interior receptacles turns the trailer into a shop at the jobsite when there is power available. Add a 12V system with a battery for the lights so they work when there is not. Skip the generator unless the crews actually need one; it is weight and maintenance that most service work does not use.

Buying more than one

If you are ordering two or more trailers for the same fleet, order them together. Same color, same layout, same options sheet, so they arrive matching and interchangeable. Keep them running

A fleet trailer does more miles than most, on a schedule that does not leave room for a bearing failure on a Tuesday. Put the trailers on the same maintenance calendar as the trucks: bearings, brakes, tires and lights on a fixed interval, and a walk-around at the start of the week.
