What the work does to a trailer
Logging roads and cut sites are not roads. Everything gets loaded and unloaded several times a day, usually in a hurry, frequently in mud. Chainsaws, fuel, chippers and climbing gear all go in and out constantly, and the trailer is a target overnight.
The specification that survives it
- **Tandem axle without exception.** Single axle on a rough site is asking for it, and a crew trailer gets heavy.
- **Higher load range tyres.** Sidewall damage from stumps and debris is the common failure, not tread wear.
- **A ramp that will take a walk-behind or a small machine** without flexing under it.
- **A side door**, because getting to the front of the load without opening the rear on a slope is worth a lot.
- **Serious door hardware.** Latches and hinges are the first thing to fail on a trailer opened forty times a day in grit.
- **Ventilation**, particularly if fuel or two-stroke mix travels inside.
- **Interior tie-downs and racks** so saws and gear are not moving around and beating up the walls.

Worth taking seriously. Petrol vapour accumulates in a sealed box and the consequences of that are not theoretical. Roof vents, approved containers properly secured, and never storing fuel in a trailer parked against a building are basic and they matter.
Security
Saws are stolen constantly, and a marked tree service trailer advertises exactly what is inside it. Upgraded latches, lock guards, a hitch lock overnight, and serial numbers recorded and photographed are all worth the small effort. So is not leaving it loaded on a jobsite over a weekend if it can be helped.
Maintenance in this environment
Bearings take a beating on unpaved roads and grit gets everywhere. Service them on schedule rather than on symptom, wash the underside regularly, and check the frame and welds for damage after any hard site. The trailers we see last longest in this work are the ones whose owners treat them like equipment rather than like a box.

What size trailer for a tree service crew?+
A 7x16 tandem covers most two- to three-man crews with saws, gear, fuel and a walk-behind. Larger outfits running a chipper or a mini skid step up from there, and at that point the tow vehicle and the ramp rating become the deciding factors.
Is it safe to carry fuel in an enclosed trailer?+
Only with proper ventilation, approved containers, and the containers properly secured so they cannot tip. Vapour accumulating in a sealed box is a real hazard. Roof vents are inexpensive and they are not optional on a trailer that carries fuel.
