Running a Mobile Business Out of a Trailer

A mobile business trailer is premises, not transport. Specify it as a workspace and the business runs better.

Detailing, pressure washing, mobile repair, small engine service, mobile welding — across South Georgia and North Florida a large number of small businesses operate entirely out of an enclosed trailer. The ones that work well are set up as a workspace rather than as storage with tools in it.

The shell decisions

  • **Interior height first.** If you work inside it, standing up matters more than any other option.
  • **7x14 minimum for most trades**, and 7x16 if equipment is fixed rather than carried in and out.
  • **Side door, always.** Working out of the back door only means unloading to reach anything.
  • **Tandem axle** for stability and for the weight that accumulates once a business is properly equipped.
  • **Ventilation**, which becomes essential the moment fuel, chemicals or a generator are involved.

Power

This is the decision that shapes everything else. Options run from a generator carried in and set up outside, through an onboard generator compartment, to a battery and inverter system with shore power charging. Each has real trade-offs in cost, noise, weight and how quickly you can start work on arrival.

Whatever you choose, plan the electrical before the fit-out rather than adding it around finished cabinetry. Retrofitting wiring into a completed interior is miserable work.

Water, where it applies

Detailing and pressure washing carry water, and water is heavy — roughly eight pounds a gallon. A hundred-gallon tank is eight hundred pounds before anything else goes in. Tank position matters for tongue weight and stability, and baffling matters because unbaffled water sloshing around changes how the trailer behaves under braking.

Layout

Think about the sequence of the job rather than about storage. What comes out first should be nearest the door. Heavy items go low and over the axles. Anything you use every job should be reachable without moving something else.

Fixed storage — shelving, cabinets, E-track — is what turns a box into premises. It costs a weekend and it saves time on every job for years.

The outside is marketing

A clean, wrapped trailer parked at a customer's house is the most effective advertising most small service businesses have. Worth choosing a colour and a flat-sided unit that will take a wrap cleanly, and worth keeping it clean afterwards — a scruffy trailer says something about the work whether it is fair or not.

Frequently Asked

What size trailer for a mobile detailing or pressure washing business?+

A 7x14 tandem is the common starting point and 7x16 if equipment is permanently mounted. Prioritise interior height and a side door, and remember that water is heavy — a hundred-gallon tank is around eight hundred pounds before anything else goes aboard.

Should I plan power before or after the fit-out?+

Before, without question. Retrofitting wiring, a generator compartment or an inverter system into finished cabinetry is difficult and expensive. Decide the power approach first and build the interior around it.
