Hunting is a serious part of the economy across South Georgia, North Florida and the Lowcountry, and from late summer onward it generates a very particular kind of trailer demand. Leases have to be prepared, stands and feeders moved, ATVs hauled in, and gear kept dry and locked for months.
Sizing it for an ATV or side-by-side
This is where most buyers get it wrong, and the error is nearly always in width and height rather than length. A modern side-by-side is wider and taller than people expect, and a trailer that fits it on paper can be awkward to load in practice.
- 1Measure your machine — width at the widest point including mirrors, and height at the roll bar or roof.
- 2Add real clearance rather than the minimum. Loading a machine into an opening with two inches of margin in the dark and the rain is a bad experience.
- 3Check the ramp rating against the machine's weight, not just the trailer's capacity.
- 4Check the interior height at the door opening, which is often lower than the interior height in the middle.
- 5Confirm the tie-down points are positioned where the machine's anchor points actually are.
What else goes in it
Almost never just the machine. Feed, corn, a chainsaw, tools for stands, a generator, coolers and everything else that a lease weekend requires. A trailer sized exactly to the ATV is full the moment you add the rest of it.
Enclosed for a reason
Gear left on an open trailer at a camp is gone. Enclosed and locked is the standard for good reason, and the additional benefit is that the trailer becomes dry storage at the lease rather than only transport.
The off-season
A hunting trailer sits for months, and how it sits determines its condition next September.
- Do not store it loaded and damp. Ventilate it, and do not close it up wet.
- Take the fuel and anything perishable out.
- Park it on something that drains rather than on grass.
- Move it occasionally so the tyres do not flat-spot and the bearings are not sitting in the same position for eight months.
- Check for rodents. A trailer parked at a rural property over a summer is an attractive place to live, and wiring is what they chew.
