How Far Is Too Far to Tow a New Trailer Home?
The distance is rarely the problem. The tow vehicle, the first fifty miles and the plan for a flat are what matter.

We get asked this most often by buyers in Jacksonville, Tallahassee, Dothan and the Lowcountry, all of whom are looking at a 130 to 175 mile tow home on a trailer they have owned for twenty minutes. It is a fair question and the honest answer is that distance is not usually the deciding factor.
What actually matters
Whether the tow vehicle is genuinely up to it
This is the real question and it deserves a straight answer before you commit. Check the door jamb sticker and the manual for the tow rating, the payload, and the tongue weight your hitch is rated for. A half-ton truck will handle most enclosed cargo comfortably; a mid-size SUV pulling a 7x16 tandem is a different proposition and it is worth being honest with yourself about it.
Brakes matter as much as pulling power. If the trailer has electric brakes you need a controller in the tow vehicle, and it needs to be set up rather than just installed.
The first fifty miles
Almost everything that goes wrong on a first tow goes wrong early. Fasteners settle, a coupler that felt secure works loose, a load that was fine in the yard shifts once it has been through a few corners.

Having a plan for a flat
This is the one that catches people out on a long tow. Do you have a spare for the trailer, and do you have a jack and a wrench that fit it? Roadside assistance policies frequently do not cover a trailer, or cover it only as a separate item. Sort that before the drive, not on the shoulder of I-95.
Speed and following distance
Trailer tyres are usually speed rated lower than truck tyres, and heat is what kills them. Running at a moderate interstate speed rather than at the limit is genuinely the difference on a long tow in Southeast summer heat. Leave far more following distance than feels necessary — your stopping distance has changed substantially and it does not feel like it until you need it.
When delivery is simply the better answer
If your tow vehicle is marginal, if you have never towed anything this size, if the weather is bad, or if the drive would mean towing at night on unfamiliar roads — take the delivery.
